Our next meeting : 26th June 2025

This is going to be a fun evening based on the idea of team turning. Each members has been emailed instructions as to the project, and the idea is to make up teams with novice, intermediate and experienced turners to complete the task in a limited period of time.

Alec brought a range of items that could be enhanced in order to make an ear ring stand. Each represented an increase in complexity:

Report on Meeting 29th May 2025

There was a meeting and an undoubtedly interesting meeting with a demonstration of using whisky barrel staves by John. Unfortunately at this stage there is no report. as the author was absent from the meeting. Hopefully some words will follow !

The board meeting for this date was also postponed until June 5th due to the absence of the Chair and also the Secretary.

Our next meeting Thursday 29th May 6.45pm

Please note that there is a board meeting on this day so the workshop will not be open until 6.30pm. John Ruickbie will lead a session on stave construction using staves from whisky barrels. This will be a demonstration.

There will also be the next competition, for a natural edged piece. Judged in the novice, Intermediate and Open classes.

Report on Our meeting 15th May

This was a presentation by Nick and Errol on finishes and finishing . Errol was keen to show the importance of sharp tools for finishing . He brought examples of work done with blunt tools and sharp tools and the difference was clear to all . Nick and Errol then went through various off the shelf and home made substances for finishing and shared their experience of good and bad and which suited which purpose . They also pointed out some things that were available at much lower prices in unbranded versions.

” Showtime” meeting . 1st May 2025

We had a pleasant relaxed evening, with plenty of opportunities to look at some members work, and to get ideas, and tips on projects for the future. It was also an opportunity for exhibitors to show their work and ask for advice on dealing with particular challenges.

As editor of the website I would like to express my thanks to Alec Mutch for the detail that he has put in previous reports. Regretfully this level of detail cannot continue unless a more skilled wood turner than me can take over writing such a blog for the website.
