Promoting the art and craft of woodturning in the Scottish Highlands
This evening marked the end of the summer season, which makes no difference to the programme, but means we have the winter to look forward too. Apposite for this time of the year this evenings meeting saw the creation of everlasting winter fruits. The evening was organised by David Hobson.
This evenings theme was ” Plates” . The meeting coincided with the Black Isle show, which didnt make it easy to get to Munlochy. We managed to occupy 4 lathes with turners of differing skills, from Novice to Experienced. This meant that there was something for everyone, to both learn from and offer advice to.
Tonight’s meeting was also a round in the Shield competition, and judges allocated points to earring stands in the 3 categories: Novice, Intermediate and Open.
We had an interesting evening looking at peoples work, and also hearing some tips and ideas. One member proudly showed us the way his work had progressed since he started turning a few months ago.
This meeting had a series of demonstrations of box making, by Graeme Gunn, David Hobson, Alan Smith, David Ross, Nick Simpson and Chris Lycett.

Our meeting on Thursday 1st May 2025 is one of our SHOWTIME meetings, it’s being handled by Susan Drew, you are all invited to bring along some of your turnings to show, or just to discuss anything in regards to the item or items you are showing.

Our meeting on Thursday 17th April 2025 was organized by Keith Brown, Keith’s theme for the evening was making wooden Platters or Shallow Bowls. He had arranged for all of the club’s lathes to be in use, each of them making a Platter or Shallow Bowl and all with a different take on the subject.

In charge of competitions for the club is David Hobson, the subject matter for this competition was to make a money box, all 3 categories of members were tasked with the same remit. This was not as easy as it first appears the making of a money box using a lathe requires some considerable consideration, and there were precious few examples on line for you to copy, this was going to be very interesting to see exactly what the members would come up with.

Our latest meeting on Thursday 20th March was a solo presentation by Dave Line on the art of Segmented or Polychromatic assemblies. This art relies on using many pieces of woods of various colours that have to be cut to very accurate tolerances in order to make some of the items featured here.

Our meeting on Thursday 6th March 2025 was a demonstration by Mark Sutton on the art of making boxes.
After being introduced by our new chairman, Mark gave the meeting a short history about his turning. He was a founding member of this club that started in 2006 and is still a member today. His involvement in the demonstration circuit came about by Alec asking Mark to do demonstrations at our premises. This led on to him doing demonstrations elsewhere . Mark always comes back to his roots in the club when invited to do a demonstration.
