Report of meeting on 1st October 2026

This was one of our occasional evenings where we have a guest turner. Tonight we saw the return of Gary Lowe. Gary demonstrated his way of making boxes combining different timbers and a finial. Gary gave us, many useful hints and tips to help us along the way.

After rounding off the blank, a tenon is cut in the end to receive the other timber piece.
The other piece is prepared to fit over the tenon
After gluing the piece to one end, the other end is prepared
Once the second end is glued, the shape is formed.
A hole is bored through the piece
The hollowing begins!
Forming the lid
Attach the lid to begin the final shaping
If necessary use electrical tape to hold the lid firmly
Finishing off the lid
The finial – needs a dense wood.
