Our next meeting 17-03-2022, a demonstration by Alec Mutch.

Start time 6.45pm.

Our meeting this week on Thursday 17th March 2022 is going to be a demonstration by Alec Mutch, Alec will be making one of Mick O’Donnell’s bird interpretations, Alec first saw Mick making one of these at a demonstration Mick did for the North Highland Woodturners based in Castletown near Thurso, and gave Alec permission to replicate his design when demonstrating at other venues.

Alec’s most recent demonstration where he made one of these birds was at a demonstration he did for Grampian Woodturners in Cults Aberdeen on the 28th November 2021.

Here are a couple of pictures of some of the birds Alec had made over the years, also included is a couple of pictures from the Aberdeen demonstration.

This was one of my very first attempts at making the bird, the body was made from Poplar, the head from Rengas and the base was a piece of Burr elm.
Here’s a little group of birds made in a variety of woods, one has a curved beak, I would be interested to hear how you think the curved beak was achieved ?
Left, here I am at the Aberdeen club doing my introductions and showing the club members what I was going make. Right, Making the body shape in progress.
Left, Nearing completion, here I can be seen fixing the bird to the Burr elm base. Right, My finished bird, my demonstration lasted about 2 hours and was well received.

We hope to see you all there on Thursday evening, do remember the Covid rules are still in place, you will be required to sign in and wear a face mask. The usual raffles and refreshments will be available and you will all be seated.
